Local Law Enforcement Officer Graduates from FBI National Academy

Middlebury, Vermont - On Thursday, December 12, 2024, Addison County Sheriff Michael Elmore graduated as a member of the 292nd session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Sheriff Elmore is the first police officer in department history to complete this prestigious program. Nationally, fewer than one percent of officers have the opportunity to attend this training.

Internationally known for its academic excellence, the National Academy offers 11 weeks of advanced communication, leadership, and fitness training. Participants must have proven records as professionals within their agencies to attend. On average, these officers have 21 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions.

The 292nd session consisted of two-hundred and fifty-seven law enforcement officers from 48 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and included members of law enforcement agencies from 27 countries, eight military organizations, and five federal civilian organizations.

“My graduation from the FBI National Academy represents an exceptional milestone not just for my career, but for the Sheriff’s Office as a whole,” said Sheriff Elmore. “I have had the opportunity to connect with, and learn from, some of the top law enforcement executives from across the U.S. and around the world. Being able to hear their experiences was invaluable and has helped shape my leadership ability. I’m extremely thankful for the chance I had to attend this world-class training, and I would also like to extend my gratitude to the FBI Office in Albany for their instrumental partnership in this program.”

Sheriff Elmore has proudly served with the Addison County Sheriff’s Department for seven and a half years, with almost 2 of those years as the elected Sheriff. Born and raised in Middlebury, he is the son of Paul and Tammy Elmore, whose values and support have been instrumental in helping shape who he has become. Balancing his career, he shares his life with his wife, Rose, whose encouragement and unwavering support have also been vital to his achievements. They have 1 beloved son, Owen, and plan to welcome their second child in January. Sheriff Elmore received the Gaiotti Award for honesty, loyalty, and teamwork when he graduated from the Vermont Police Academy in 2018 and was named Addison County’s Law Enforcement Officer of the Year in 2020. Following the National Academy, he plans to finish his Master’s Degree in Public Safety Administration within the next 3 years.
